How to Deal with Sudden Temper Tantrums in Kids?

Temper tantrums in kids are something we can all relate to as parents. From crying and whining to screaming and hitting, we have all witnessed such sudden emotional outbreaks in our kids in all shapes and sizes now and then. Isn’t it? Despite how nasty they look, temper tantrums in kids are part and parcel of their growing up.

Kids often do not know how to show or communicate when they are frustrated, tired, upset, or uncomfortable about a situation. Hence, they convey their discomfort as momentary meltdowns in an attempt to take control over their environment. Dealing with sudden temper tantrums in kids can be tricky at times. Here are some tips to help you manage the next occurrence of disruptive behavior in your kids.

Avoiding the Temper Tantrums Situation Altogether

The very first attempt at managing temper tantrums in kids is to avoid them from happening at all. Remember, you need to groom your kids over time, helping them understand their behavior and teaching them the right thing to do. Here is how you can help your kids manage their emotional outbursts:

1)    Provide positive attention

The key is to appreciate the good deeds and virtuous habits of your kids. Give ample attention to their positive behavior and reward them with praise. Help them learn new skills and praise them when they succeed. It also boosts their self-confidence and keeps them motivated.

2)    Help them make minor choices

The idea is to help them get some control over the little things in their lives and develop a sense of responsibility. Make sure you ask the right question. Like, if you want your toddler to brush their teeth, give them a choice about whether he wants to do it before or after bath instead of a direct command which is likely to be turned down.

3)    Understand the limits of your child

It is never a good idea to push your kids into doing something when they are tired or distracted. Know their limits before you expect them to behave in a certain way. Consider their request carefully.

4)    Little distraction helps

Kids often have a short attention span. Sometimes, distracting them by just offering something in place does the trick. Start a new activity or change the environment. Make sure you keep off-limit items out of sight to avoid unnecessary struggles.

How to Handle Ongoing Temper Tantrums in Kids?

Tip 1- First and foremost, make sure you do not respond in an outburst. You may complicate the situation further with anger or frustration. Keep your cool and help your kid calm down.

Tip 2 - Remember, your child is upset about something, so try to analyze the situation first before deciding your response. Try to provide comfort to your whining kid. If you cannot figure out a plausible cause for the behavior, it is best to ignore the reaction and distract your child.

Tip 3 - Kids often throw a tantrum to get instant attention from their parents. Ignoring the behavior and distracting your kids can help you reduce the deportment over time.

Tip 4 - You can always follow through about their expected conduct once your child is calm. If your toddler repeats forbidden behavior, try holding him firmly for several minutes.

Tip-5 - Give your child enough time to cool off and regain control. This little exercise can be empowering over time as the child learns to analyze the outcome of their actions and take control of their senses.

Tip 6 - Remember that kids are often vulnerable after a tantrum. Make sure to hug, reassure them, and let them know that they are loved no matter what. Keep a check of their sleep cycle and make sure they have enough sleep.
