Positive impact of storytelling on kids

Recently, I discovered a latent talent of mine. I have this amazing talent for making up stories to my kids related to my life. This art of mine helps me to achieve my motive of distracting the attention of my child to the desired object or action.

How I induced my daughter to go to school through storytelling?

For the past few days, my 3-year-old daughter has become cranky and fussy. She would cry without any reason and at times refuse to go to school. She would demand something which is not available or cannot be prepared at once.

Moreover, her reluctance to go to school surprised me because she used to be so excited and prepared to go to school even on weekends. Now, this sudden change was not easy to get rid of. So, today when she showed her tantrums, I decided to handle it differently.

I told her a story when I used to be young like her and avoided school. I told her that my teachers and friends cried and missed me and they called me to come otherwise they would not have their lunch. The story was spontaneous and I kept on adding things to divert her mind. In the last, I continued that my mother helped me in dressing up well and sent me to school. Then I asked her whether she wants to be dressed properly or shabbily while going to school. She said that she wanted to look beautiful. So we went to her almirah to find a beautiful dress which she would wear to school!!

The whole purpose of making the story was to divert her attention and convert her moody attitude into happiness.

The positive impact of storytelling on kids

Children are ready to learn easily than elders. When parents think of educating their kids, storytelling can be a valuable strategy.  It is an interesting way that not only keeps the kids engrossed but also influences their behavior.  Incorporating storytelling into the teaching process can benefit kids from an early stage in several ways.

Boosts overall child development

Storytelling encourages and increases the listening skills of children. It helps to induce overall child development. Through the habit of listening to stories, they become better listeners. Storytelling helps to improve memory power to a certain extent.

Enhances mental growth

Listening to a story instead of watching TV helps kids to develop their mental power. Creativity power increases. This creativity process induces free-thinking and the formation of innovative ideas. These developments help them in future life.

Understands the topic in a better way

Storytelling can be a better understanding of a tedious subject. This is helpful as in many cases kids do not understand a subject better. So, the storytelling strategy enables infants to understand easily the subject and deepen understanding.

Encourages to be in touch with cultural roots

Listening to stories is a great way to keep children in touch with one’s cultural roots.  As children take an interest to listen to stories, so these will help to develop morale in them.  Stories should also be thought-provoking.

Develops awareness of virtues

Children can learn virtues that are vital for society through stories for kids. Stories develop certain traits like courage, wisdom, honesty, and kindness. Thus, storytelling is helpful to set the stage for emulation.

Enhances the attention span

Both young and older children face the struggle of staying attentive.  An appealing story encourages even restless children to listen for minute details and the anticipated ending. Thus, with story for kids, the latter become attentive.

How to develop storytelling habits in kids?

Storytelling is a great tool through which children can acquire new habits or learn human values. It is an easy way to motivate children and to handle their mood swings. Either develop a story of your own or read out from a storybook. Both have a positive impact on the kids.

  1. Storytelling is such an important part of being a child and is something that as an adult, you sometimes remember. Even now, I can remember small parts of stories my mum told me and I can apply them to my life.
